Teledec believes learner engagement is essential to learning.
How can you engage your learners effectively? What does it take to sustain learner interest and deliver memorable learning experiences? How can you ensure your people connect instantly with the content of your e-learning course?
Well, we believe you need to use a highly effective, time-tested instructional technique – storytelling.
Stories are an effective method to communicate important messages to people as they can be fun and interesting. They help your learners visualize what is being taught, thereby facilitating learning of high quality. Good, relevant stories go a long way in enhancing concentration levels.
Telling a story is a natural form of revealing an incident or revealing a series of incidents, which are either fictional or real. This natural form of communication is called ‘Storytelling’. In other words story telling is the power exhibited by a storyteller over the imagination of a listener. This form of communication is increasingly being used to transform information into knowledge. Knowledge transferred in this manner will be retained for a longer period and hence could play an important role during “Training”.
What makes story telling important? The reasons are many.
Connects Learner to the Subject
Many learners feel that the content being delivered in the training is unrelated to them. So they generally lose interest in the topics being discussed. Using a story can help develop the listener’s interest in the subject thereby connecting him/her to it easily. Story telling will be much more effective if the content of the story is related to the teller’s real life experiences.
Transfer Information to the Learner in a Unique Way
The information, which is to be transferred to the learner is woven into the story and is related to the existing knowledge of the learner. This helps the learner relate the new information to his past experiences and makes the content easier to remember.
Enables Learner to Get Involved with the Subject Matter Emotionally
Stories are considered to be an excellent way to gain the attention of learners and can convey deeper meanings as they help learners connect with the content emotionally. For example, if you are sensitizing a new set of employees about your organization’s policies on workplace harassment, stories make it easier to convey the message in an impartial and effectual manner.
Motivates Learner towards Learning Goals
Story telling is an ideal way of motivating a learner to realize his learning goals. Inspirational stories can always be thought provoking, leading to meaningful action. They can be powerful motivational tools without carrying a preachy tone.
Makes Data More Meaningful
Stories can convert dry data into interesting information, which then becomes meaningful and easier for the learner to remember. For example, in a safety-training program, a long list of dos and don’ts will be rather dry and boring to the learner. However, if the same information is conveyed using characters in stories, it makes a lot more sense to the learner and he/she is likely to register the information better.
